Giáo hoàng Francis được bình chọn là người mặc đẹp nhất năm 2013

Tạp chí thời trang nổi tiếng Esquire của Mỹ vừa xếp Giáo hoàng Francis ở vị trí đầu bảng xếp hạng những nhân vật ăn mặc đẹp nhất trong năm 2013.
"Chúng tôi đều nhanh chóng đi tới thống nhất rằng Giáo hoàng Francis là người mặc đẹp nhất trong năm 2013 vừa qua. Những lựa chọn ăn mặc của ngài không hề xa hoa, trong khi vô cùng tinh tế" - trích thông báo của Tạp chí Esquire.
Trong năm qua, Giáo hoàng Francis luôn được coi là biểu tượng cho việc loại bỏ mọi sự gợi ý về sự xa xỉ và tốn kém. Không khoác lên người những bộ trang phục rườm rà hay đính đầy vàng, ông thường xuất hiện trước công chúng trong lễ phục trắng đơn giản, thân thiện và dễ gần. Ông cũng không chọn đi những những đôi giày da màu đỏ vốn rất được Giáo Hoàng Benedict XVI ưa chuộng, mà thường xuyên đi những đôi giày đen của mình được mang từ Buenos Aires.
Bên cạnh đó, Giáo hoàng Francis còn xa lánh chiếc xe Popemobile - vốn được thiết kế riêng dành cho Giáo Hoàng và chiếc xe limo bọc thép được sử dụng bởi các giáo hoàng trước đó, thay vào đó là một chiếc xe hiệu Renault bình dân. Sau khi chính thức được lựa chọn làm Giáo hoàng, ông còn đích thân gọi điện cho một chủ cửa hàng tạp phẩm ở quê hương của mình tại Argentina để báo cắt việc đặt báo cá nhân, đồng thời tự thanh toán hóa đơn tiền phòng khách sạn.
Vừa qua, Tạp chí Time cũng vừa vinh danh Giáo hoàng Francis là nhân vật nổi bật của năm 2013.

When the current pope was elected and chose not to wear the red shoes I thought that was very reflective of his approach to being a person functioning in a role." Pope Francis has been big on symbolic gestures—paying his own bill at a hotel owned by the Church or washing the feet of inmates (two of whom were female) on Holy Thursday—and the black shoes and unadorned, simplistic regalia are just an outward acknowledgement of his progressive orthodoxy. "Pope Francis understands that menswear is meant to express the character of the man wearing the clothes," says Mary Lisa Gavenas, author of The Fairchild Encyclopedia of Menswear, before adding: "No rapper-style popewear for him." True, the opulent jewelry and fur-lined capes of yore have given way to humbler dress, and this break from aesthetic tradition says a lot of the man and what he hopes to achieve while doing his earthly duties. He's certainly been the most approachable Pope in recent memory, one who tweets his gospel, takes selfies, sneaks out of his modest apartment (he declined moving into the Apostolic Palace) in a disguise to help the poor, and even hangs out with Patti Smith. Ann Pellegrini, Associate Professor of Performance Studies & Religious Studies at New York University puts it this way: "The humility of his garments offers a way to visibly display his theological and material concerns for the poor.
